The name of this ancient suburb derives from Vignoni, castle already known in the XI century, whose traces dominate the high ground above the suburb, and from the thermal waters used since the Roman epoch, as they testify numerous archaeological finds that are found in the collection Chigi in Siena National Archaeological Museum. In the XII century the " Bath " was subject to the family Tignosi, gentlemen of they Tinkle, now Fortress of Orcia, under whose dominion remained up to the end of 200; to the beginning of 300, Bath Vìgnoni and the suburbs and surrounding castles, passed in possession of the family senese of the Salimbenis, to which it remained up to 1417, when the second husband of Antonia Salimbeni, Attendolo Sforza, the revenges to the commune in Siena.
Despite the numerous episodes of war, devastations and fires that the Val of Orcia involved during the medioevo, the order of the suburb of Bath Vignoni has substantially been since then unchanged up to our days. The village was developed in an open space, to half among the hill of Vignoni and the steep throat formed by the river Orcia, around in a great rectangular tub, within which waters gush out: this element that is the generating future of the plant of the suburb and the center of the village, constitutes still an evident call to some aspects proper of the Roman thermal fittings.
Around the tub the residences were prepared, the inns and subsequently the church of St. Giovanni Battista, where currently possible to see the fragment restored of the fresco raffigurante risen Christ attributed to is Future Salimbeni, originally situated in the chapel of holy Caterina. From the tub, gone beyond a bridge parvis, the waters they reached the thermal baths and then they went to feed a series of mills prepared on the steep degrading eyelash toward the river that is possible to visit today thanks. to a conservative improvement of the area, recently effected by the Commune of St. Quirico of Qrcia (Park of the mills).
